Mitsubishi Polyester Film GmbH, part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group, has begun production at a new 125 million Euro facility at its Wiesbaden site, expanding the company’s output of polyester (PET) film. The new line adds about 27,000 metric tons of annual capacity, increasing the site’s total production to 75,000 metric tons. Construction broke ground in 2023, production began in February 2026, and the facility was formally inaugurated on April 29, 2026.

The company's PET films are utilized in a variety of applications, including security threads and holograms for euro banknotes, as well as packaging, furniture coatings, UV protection, and electric-vehicle components. The new facility is designed to operate significantly more energy efficiently, reducing the company's overall CO2 emissions, and supports a circular approach by recycling used PET film back into production. It also highlights Mitsubishi's long-term commitment to Hessen as a manufacturing base. Since 1954, Wiesbaden has been a producer of polyester film. Following the dissolution of the German chemical group Hoechst AG in 1997, Mitsubishi assumed operational control of the Wiesbaden facility. The company is the only PET film supplier currently investing in new European production capacity, and holds a stake in InfraServ Wiesbaden, which operates the surrounding industrial park.

The investment secures approximately 560 existing jobs at the site and adds about 30 new positions, even as production volume rises by around 50%. This increase in production is largely due to higher automation in areas such as packaging.
