Saubermacher Opens One of Europe’s Most Advanced Battery Recycling Facilities in Hessen
The leading international waste management and recycling company opens a new high-tech battery recycling facility on a former MAN industrial site in the Rhine-Main region Wiesbaden.

Saubermacher, an Austrian family-owned waste management and recycling company and a global market leader in battery recycling, has opened one of Europe's most advanced battery recycling facilities in Ginsheim-Gustavsburg, strategically located in the Rhine-Main region near Wiesbaden. The initiative has been developed to achieve two key objectives. Firstly, it aims to address the growing need for the disposal of device and household batteries. Secondly, it seeks to recover raw materials from used batteries, thereby strengthening Europe's independence from imports.
The site was officially inaugurated by Boris Rhein, the Governor of Hessen. During the inauguration, Rhein emphasized Hessen's standing as a modern industrial hub and praised the state's efficient use of resources, highlighting it as a significant competitive advantage. The project received 700,000 Euro in funding from the Hessen Ministry of Economic Affairs, Energy, Transport, Housing and Rural Development, underscoring the state's support for innovative and resource-efficient projects.
The facility's primary focus is on recycling lithium-ion batteries and recovering critical raw materials, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper. Saubermacher's state-of-the-art processes are capable of recovering up to 95% of the contained metals, ensuring the efficient reuse of valuable materials within the production cycle.
Located on a former MAN industrial site, the project showcases how existing industrial infrastructure can be successfully repurposed and modernized, representing a best-practice approach to resource-efficient industrial development.
This investment further solidifies Hessen's appeal for companies seeking to expand in innovative industries. The state's central location in Europe, extensive public support, robust infrastructure and connectivity, and a diverse base of innovative industries and talent create a compelling environment for international investment.
