Focused Energy, a laser fusion company headquartered in Darmstadt, has raised 240 million Dollar in what it describes as the largest fully secured Series A financing round in the global fusion industry to date. The capital will fund the world’s first laser fusion power plant, to be built on the site of a former RWE nuclear power plant in Biblis near Frankfurt am Main. Focused Energy aims to bring the plant online in the mid-2030s.

RWE, an existing investor in Focused Energy, is expanding its stake as part of the oversubscribed round, which also drew Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation SPRIND, the European Innovation Council Fund (EIC Fund), and previous lead investor Prime Movers Lab, alongside additional backers from across Europe, Asia, and the Gulf region. In addition to financial investment, RWE is providing the site itself and regulatory expertise from decommissioning nuclear facilities. Focused Energy has stated that this support will accelerate its progress towards commercial deployment.

Laser fusion is the only fusion method to date to have demonstrated a scientifically verified net energy gain – meaning it produces more energy than it consumes. Founded in 2021 as a spin-off of the Technical University of Darmstadt, Focused Energy now employs more than 160 scientists and engineers from over 20 countries, with additional offices in Berlin, Austin, Texas, and San Francisco, California.

Kaweh Mansoori, Hessen’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Energy, Transport, Housing and Rural Development, said “the scale of the investment sends a strong signal and is a clear sign of confidence in our region,” pointing to the state’s research infrastructure and backing through funds such as “HessenFonds Beteiligungen” and “Hessen Kapital.”
