When people say “work where other people take vacation”, your first thought might be of brilliant sunshine, blue sea and colorful cocktails. But in Hessen, even in winter you can enjoy the sun setting over the nearby snow-covered mountains, the River Rhine winding its way through the green landscape, and cozy pubs offering cyclists a refreshing drink – making it abundantly clear why Hessen is becoming more and more attractive for tourists. Last year, visitors accounted for well over 35 million overnight stays here, according to the State Statistical Office. This was 2.5% more than in 2018. In 2019, a total of almost 16 million guests (+2.2%) booked overnight stays in the approximately 90,000 rooms available in hotels and other accommodation. “2019 was the tenth record year in a row – for Hessen as well as for Germany as a whole,” said Al-Wazir. Nationwide, Hessen had the highest number of foreign guests with around 8.2 million overnight stays for tourism and business purposes, corresponding to an increase of 67%. Most guests came from the United States, which had a clear lead over the Netherlands, China and the UK. Tourism has been booming, especially in the cities of Kassel and Frankfurt as well as in parts of central Hessen. Maybe you will soon be on vacation where we work? Or you could work here – where others take vacation.
